Columbus Futsal Hosting Free Urban Soccer Diploma Course

As community leaders of the street game, Columbus Futsal is partnering with United Soccer Coaches and Target to bring the Urban Soccer Futsal Diploma course to Columbus, OH on Friday, September 20th. This is a FREE course limited to 25 registrants who are community based soccer leaders in Columbus or those interested in growing urban soccer programs in their neighborhoods.

Registrants will receive access to the coaching app, a free trial membership to United Soccer Coaches online, and the Urban Soccer Futsal Diploma.

The Urban Soccer Diploma was created by Vince Ganzberg out of Indianapolis, who will instruct the course in tandem with Dante Garcia. Theory and practical sessions are part of this course. An optional light reception is to follow for all guests.

Garcia, who has been a huge promoter of the urbanized game much like you see in South America and Europe, has been organizing free street pickup games for over 13 years. "Street soccer and open play is the foundation of success to U.S. Soccer. Kids need to experience what its like to go play on their own without referees, parents, or coaching. They need to play as much as they can with a ball, some music, and their friends."

Columbus Futsal president, Malissa Galiffo Garcia adds, "The things you challenge yourself to here [street court] can't be taught by a coach. It's so important to just fall in love with the game. Not everyone is going to go pro, but providing this kind of enjoyment creates a supportive system of future players, fans, coaches, and referees at all levels. There are pieces of the game where everyone can be involved throughout their lifetime."

If you can't make it to the September class, the Columbus Futsal organization hopes to provide this course again in 2020. Join us in the 2019 Target Urban Soccer Initiative!

Why Are These Skills Important? Not every community, team, and player has access to playing equipment and soccer facilities. This course provides coaches working in non-traditional soccer settings with tools to run quality programming for players living in communities where the need is greatest. Is the Urban Soccer Diploma for Me? If you work in an underserved community where soccer equipment and play spaces are not widely available, or are in the nonprofit space and want to learn best practices for coaching soccer in a non-traditional setting, this course is for you.

What Will I Learn?

Throughout the course, coaches split their time between interactive field sessions and classroom learning. These sessions teach coaches how to best engage urban youth and youth living in underserved communities through soccer.
